FORMAL SUMMARY

Vis à vis with the Catalan designer Rodrigo Izquierdo in his sophisticated Milanese apartment.

ASSERTIVE COLORS, DIMENSIONS AND MATERIALS CREATE A MEASURED PLAY OF CONTRASTS AND GIVE THE RIGHT CHARM TO THE SPACES

For the Catalan designer Rodrigo Izquierdo, born in Barcelona in 1979, the home is an extension of oneself. And the Milanese apartment in which he lives, one hundred and twenty square meters in a fin de siècle building in the Risorgimento area, is the manifesto of his style, of his way of being and designing, subject to a single organizing principle, balance. «Everything fits, but everything must be balanced, materials, colors, dimensions», he says.

Rigorously studied, designed with a rational decorative spirit, this home expresses love for geometric rigor, clean lines, a measured play of contrasts: saturated colors (forest green, electric blue, gold) and neutral tones, vintage furnishings and contemporary paintings, natural light and artificial lighting. The result, of rigorous formal synthesis, is a space of classical harmonies with an avant-garde feel.

Here Izquierdo, who worked for ten years alongside Patricia Urquiola and in 2016 opened the interior studio that bears her name, juxtaposed designer lamps, works of art and furniture collected over the years. «Some purchased online on specialized sites, such as the Danish 1960s rosewood sideboard in the dining room, others purchased in shops or in showrooms of brands with which I have collaborated», he confides. Pieces arranged in environments characterized by high ceilings, period floors and warm gray walls, with a thick black plinth passing through, “a very bold graphic touch, which acts as an ideal link between all the rooms”.

The homeowner’s favourite area is the living room, flooded by the sun’s rays, with the deep sofa by Patricia Urquiola for Moroso, “where I can relax after a day of work”, the enveloping armchairs designed by Rodrigo himself, the soft gray carpet on the light wooden parquet and the careful selection of paintings on the walls. Artwork chosen with a free eye, “because I fall in love with the work, not with the author”.

«Everything fits, but everything must be balanced, materials, colors, dimensions».
Rodrigo Izquierdo
